Ted Simmons Denied Hall Admission, Again

It was announced earlier this morning that former Cardinal catcher Ted Simmons was passed over for the Hall of Fame. He didn’t even receive half of the possible votes, which is a shame.

Simmons ranks near the top of all offensive statistics for catchers, yet he’s not a serious candidate for the Hall of Fame. He didn’t make it past the first vote on the BBWAA ballot when he first became eligible. He then had to wait years to get onto the Veteran’s Committee ballot; he’ll now have to wait 3 years before he’s on the next ballot (each year’s vote for the Veterans rotates between time periods).

What’s worse, his former manager – Whitey Herzog – and a former teammate – Ozzie Smith – are on the Veteran’s Committee. If I would have been either of the 2, I would have been lobbying the other voters for Simmons.
